Have you ever been told paying rent is like throwing money down the drain? - you spend years (and thousands of pounds) paying off your landlord's mortgage and when you’re ready to move on, have nothing to show for it. Now research from the Halifax confirms that, not only is it money down the drain, it’s more money spent than necessary - £98 a month more to be precise.
Britain’s biggest lender calculated that the average monthly cost of owning a three bedroom house is £608 a month but the equivalent monthly rental is 14 per cent more at £706.
